The Shift

Kristopher Polaha and Neal McDonough in the same movie? Say no more as far as I'm concerned. That was part of what drew my attention to our latest find on the Angel streaming service. This pick is called The Shift. For those of you who like movies about traveling through time or other dimensions, the surface theme will be appealing. The sets, props, and even the dialogue give this movie a very dystopian feel. That also drew my attention to this movie because I enjoy dystopian story telling. But, as with everything we've watched on Angel, there is greater depth to the story.

This movie is a modern retelling of the story of Job. So, like Job, Kristopher Polaha's character, Kevin is faced with losing everything--his job, his child, his wife. He is "shifted"to another dimension that is a parallel timeline where everyone lives under the rules of the Benefactor, played by Neal McDonough. Kevin's belief in hope and his overall faith are tested while he strives to find a way back home to his life and the wife he loves.

Life in this new dimension is very different from Kevin's old life. He lives his life on the run. Running from the Benefactor, running toward anything that allows him to grasp even a tiny morsel of his old life. Wondering who is trustworthy and who isn't. Kevin struggles to survive, but so does everyone else.

How many dimensions are there? Will Kevin, like Job, hold on to his faith in spite of everything? Will he make it home? Will his life be better in the end? Watch The Shift to find out.
