I've talked about television shows, movies, and made-for-tv movies so far. But, today, I'm turning my attention to something that can be enjoyed both in the comfort of our own homes, and live and in person. Baseball!!! That's right, folks, I'm a baseball fan. You probably wouldn't have guessed that, but it's true. From watching the littlest players hit off the tee to watching full-grown men in the Bigs, I love to watch baseball.
My affection for baseball started at a young age. I blame my mom for that actually. You see, I grew up on a working farm--another shocker, I'm sure. And, every summer when we would gather the vegetables from the garden, we would either watch or listen to baseball while we worked. We spent many a summer afternoon and evening under the big oak in the yard, shelling beans or shucking corn, and watching or listening to baseball. Mostly listening since we were typically outside, but IF we ended up working until after dark (and we usually did), or if we were sent inside by the rain, we would have the baseball game playing on the television.
I clearly remember arguing with umpires who would have never been able to hear me when they made a call I didn't like. My mom was a Dodger or Cardinal fan the best I can remember. I have been a Yankees fan for as long as I can remember. Of course, if the Yankees weren't playing, I would root right along with my mom. Or, sometimes, just for fun, I would root against her team just to keep the conversation lively.
In high school, I kept the book for our high school team. That meant I was at every game, and I got in for free. Hours spent at the baseball field. Nothing better for me--especially since my best friends at the time were on the team.
My oldest daughter played fast-pitch softball from the time she was 4 until she aged out of the community league at 14. Again, hours upon hours spent at the fields watching softball and baseball. My youngest son played baseball for a couple of years. Hours in the sun spent watching and cheering for him.
Now, we have two grandchildren playing. We spent multiple nights at the field cheering for them. Last season I helped get our grandson to practices and games. This year, I get to just be Mimi and enjoy the games. And, I love it.
This week is opening week for Major League Baseball. I've already watched multiple games, and we're only on the third day of the season. The Yankees played, and beat, the Giants on opening night. Yesterday, I watched the White Sox play the Brewers. The White Sox started well, but they couldn't keep up the momentum to pull out the win. This afternoon, I plan to watch the Yankees play again.
Next week, my grand-daughter is playing in a softball tournament, so I will be watching her in person, and then we will attend the opening night game of our local minor league team. We will attend several minor league games this season. That combines baseball and date night nicely. My boss is even taking our company to at least one game this season.
If you're a baseball fan like me, who's your favorite team? What got you into the game? From now until about October, if you can't find me, I'm probably at the ballpark. Come eat some popcorn and peanuts with me.
