Sketch

Do you watch movies with your kids or grandkids? We have always enjoyed family movie time. With that in mind, we watched Sketch on the Angel streaming service the other night. I will say that you might want to preview it before watching it with younger children. You will also want to consider your child's anxiety levels before watching with them. Most children will find the antics of the monsters in the film to be funny. BUT if your child is one of the select few who are prone to fearful thoughts or nightmares brought on by watching television or a movie, this might not be the show for them.

On the surface, Sketch is about a young girl whose drawings come to life after she drops her notebook in a pond behind her house. However, there are deeper themes like grief, anger, and processing the loss of a parent at a young age.

Amber loves to draw, and after her mom dies, she begins to draw monsters to help her cope with the loss of her mother. Her world feels dark, so all of her recent drawings have become dark and scary. One afternoon, she and her brother, Jack, drop her notebook of drawings into a pond in the woods behind their home causing all the drawings to come to life.

The siblings, along with an unlikely friend, must find a way to defeat the monsters before everything and everyone is destroyed. Their ideas are imaginative and require more drawing and creating. I won't tell you whether they are successful in their quest or not. You'll have to decide whether you watch to watch Sketch to find out. We did enjoy the movie, and I found the ending to be touching. I do recommend that parents watch this movie with their children as it could lead to questions about death and how your family would handle it if someone died.
